Rigel let her hair fall from the tight braid that was bound behind her. The thick silver locks fell onto her face like floating feathers. The stars of the night shown bright above and a light breeze made ripples upon a nearby lake. The moonlight reflected off of the glass like water in every direction and filled the night with an eerie glow. Rigel laid herself down upon the lakebed and starred out into the deep night. Peaceful, she thought, for now anyway. Enjoying her time of solitude allowed her to reflect upon her lengthy day that was full of both pain and deep meaningful joy.
One small town on the outskirts of the Water Region, know as Sidion, lived a rather large group of miscreants that followed The Water Goddess faithfully. This year the town had been plagued by vandalism from other regions, illness and an early drought. The vandalism was a reflection upon the raging war between the Elemental races and Rigel sensed a deep dread with these signs of darkness. Honoring her Goddess by protecting her people was a mission she could not fail. The future of her nation relied on her, the Patron Goddess of Water.
Rigel made her way into the village of Sidion as dawn broke that morning. Her light blue eyes glimmered with determination as she entered the tiny town, walking as steady as she could in the cool morning air. The sight that Rigel saw was rather depressing. Dry, lifeless plants stuck out of the water deprived topsoil in what appeared to be a farmer’s garden. The houses were well kept but still, their appearance seemed slightly worn. No children graced the town’s streets and several chicken coups were abundant with holes due to the vandalism. She trudged further through the town and reached a cemetery with freshly dug graves and slabs of slate rock to identify the loved ones lost. Next, she passed the village market. It was empty, no vegetables on any of the counters and no venders selling their wares. The town appeared to be disserted, but Rigel still continued on to the town keepers’ home that was located in the center of the village in Sidion.
Rigel stood in the doorway of the quaint home for a moment to collect herself and then knocked gently on the wooden door. She heard many locks come undone and then a woman peeked her bright green eyes out from behind the entranceway. The woman stared blankly at Rigel trying to digest her appearance. “Hal! Come here quickly! We have a guest!!” She said hurriedly, “Please Mistress, do come in.” Rigel accepted her offer and stepped into the humble abode. A man came quickly to the woman’s call, but he was less surprised at Rigel’s presence and more interested in why she had come to speak with him. She then introduced herself to the gray-haired, brown-eyed elder. My name Sir, is Rigel Pregheira, and I have come to aide you and your fellow people of the Water Goddess, and in return I am looking for allies to help fight for the Water Region. “I know who you are,” said the man. Then he stared into her ice blue eyes as if to scan her entire being, then he nodded his head with approval. “Niardinel, he said to the woman, you can go. And just like that the woman was gone.
“I am Halifax Sudarie,” the old man said as he offered his hand in welcome. Rigel graciously shook it and took her seat. Halifax began to explain the severe drought and what it entailed. No food or herbs could grow in the rain-deprived soil. No one could sell their goods due to the low food production and people grew ill and died from sickness they could not cure without the aide from herbs. The fresh graves that Rigel had seen entering the village were now known as the elders’ grandchildren. Halifax spoke of them with tender love and pure sadness, and Rigel felt his pain. He then bowed his head in sorrow for his loved ones and then stood up and said “If there is anyway you could help us I will do anything that I can to help you when you are in need.”
“I am sure of it” said Rigel as she stood and calmed her thoughts. Truly, she believed this man, she knew he meant it and that is all that she needed. She moved to the window toward the back of the hut, moving slowly and calmly. As she looked, no breeze blew over the dry outside. The sun beat down as the morning made its way into the afternoon and the heat hit the town like a hammer. “How horrible.” Said Rigel, “this heat is nearly unbearable.” The old man watched her closely and shook his head in agreement. “ I know it may seem that way to you, but the people of Sidion have learned to live without the attachment to water, but like any of us, to long without it sends us to the grave.” She thought this thru and said, “I am going to bring you what you cannot gain. Make sure everyone is outside and I will inform them of our conversing.” Halifax left quickly out the back door.
Rigel stood alone and felt a flow of grief for the villagers, so trusting and kind, war was not like this. War did not know kindness only death and despair, for which she knew well, while she thought a bell rang in the distance echoing for miles and miles, calling the townspeople to meet. She knew it was time, got up and walked outside. The heat hit her with an endless wave. Water….she dreamed of, keeping her mind focused, the thought of it calmed her from the inside out. Rigel explained to the people about the drought and her help for the war. She made it clear that helping them was for faithfulness in the Goddess of Water and for war-time aide. They looked on with wondrous eyes.
Agreeing to her terms, the villagers watched intently as Rigel stepped into the distance, the sun beating down. She felt for water, her never-ending life source. The idea filled her soul, she felt connected with the element, her entire being belonged to it and yearned for the feeling of the cool, clear nothingness. The crowd looked on as she spread her arms as to feel for what was not there. Her eyes glowed a brilliant fluorescent blue and her face lit with excitement. A storm raged in the distance, puling the water from miles and miles away into the atmosphere created a spinning vortex over the landscape. The people gasped with fear, afraid and delighted by the woman. A drop of water fell to the ground and evaporated as soon as it hit the sand like dirt. As the clouds gathered and burst, it flooded the village with tears of infinite joy.
